    Upcoming Event

ACI Fall Convention Will Be Virtual

Due to local, state, and federal regulations, and to protect the health and safety of attendees, ACI will transition the ACI Concrete Convention from an in-person event in Raleigh, NC, this October, to a 100% virtual event. The ACI Virtual Concrete Convention will be held over similar dates at the end of October.

ACI Virtual Concrete Convention attendees will be able to collaborate on advancing concrete codes, specifications, and practices during hundreds of committee meetings. Technical and educational sessions will provide the latest concrete research, case studies, best practices, and the opportunity to earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Top projects in the ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards will be announced, and several virtual networking and special events will take place—building on the Convention’s tradition as the world’s gathering place for advancing concrete. Additional Convention details are being finalized and will be announced as they are confirmed.

“The ACI Virtual Concrete Convention will enable the critical work of the Institute to continue moving forward,” stated Ronald G. Burg, ACI Executive Vice President. “Additionally, this virtual format provides the opportunity for much greater participation from students, professionals, and our global colleagues who may not have been planning to attend in person.”

Registration for the ACI Virtual Concrete Convention is now available at www.aciconvention.org. Registration fees will be $299, but they will be substantially reduced to $49 for all ACI members and free to all ACI student members. Those who have registered/paid for the in-person event will be contacted regarding a refund.

Special Offer for Young Professionals with less than 8 years of industry experience.

Durability - How do we measure it?
    October 16, 2020, 10 am

There is still time to register, see below for the link.

Presenter: Katie Amelio, PE, Engineer, American Concrete Institute
Hosted by the ACI Kansas Chapter

Durability is a desirable property for all concrete structures. Ultimately, time is the true measure of durability. Without the luxury of time to wait to determine a structure’s durability, how do we define, measure, and achieve a durable concrete structure? Durable concrete structures should be long lasting this is important for a functioning society. Every project’s acceptable length of service – how long the structure needs to be durable – will be different.

This presentation will discuss the importance of durability and current test methods. Topics covered in this presentation include:
    • How to define durability
    • Where to find durability requirements and guidance
    • Commonly used durability tests for freeze-thaw and alkali-aggregate reactivity

    Learning Objectives:
    1. Define durability.
    2. Explain how exposure classes in ACI 318 and ACI 350 are used to design durable structures.
    3. Identify common durability tests for freeze-thaw and alkali-aggregate reactivity.
    4. Discuss the concept of a durability standard.

    Student Activities

    Kansas ACI $2000 Scholarship Winners:

Jack Eber is in the Construction Management program at Pittsburg State University.  Jack was introduced to the art of concrete construction while working as a laborer over summer break while he was in high school.  In college he developed an appreciation for the science behind it.  As a building material, concrete continues to hold his fascination.

Jack currently resides in Shawnee, KS and is interested in entering the field of residential concrete construction when he graduates with a bachelor’s degree in the spring of 2021.

Chelsea Lewis is in the Architectural Engineering program at Kansas State University.  Chelsea has a great appreciation for the versatility of concrete as a building material.  She is currently studying the response of structural concrete and other building materials to vibration from people walking.

Chelsea currently resides in Alma, KS and is interested in entering the field of structural engineering when she graduates with a master’s degree in the spring of 2022.

Pooya Vosough Grayli is currently a Ph. D. candidate in the Civil Engineering program at the University of Kansas.  Pooya’s focus of study is on concrete’s contribution to corrosion resistance of steel reinforced structures.

Pooya currently resides in Lawrence, KS and intends to become a licensed professional engineer in the state of KS when he completes his studies this December.

ACI Foundation has an International Scholarship open for the 2020-2021 season. Deadline for entry is November 2, 2020.

Kansas ACI Resumes Examinations During Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent actions have caused many disruptions, including the cancelling of many ACI Certification activities across the country.  In Kansas, we were forced to cancel the ACI Field Testing Technician exams that were scheduled in April and May, as well as other sessions for different ACI certification programs.  Luckily, we were able to start up again in early June and proceed with our scheduled event in August. We’ve adapted our procedures and continue to make improvements to reduce the risk to our examinees and volunteers by following current CDC guidelines and staggering exam times to limit the number of people in one location.  We will make every effort to proceed with the remaining exam dates posted on our website, and possibly add some more if possible.  Always check our Certification page on the Kansas ACI website for current offerings.

    ACI Certification Online Training Resources

The Institute has developed four online training programs for engineers and contractors looking to earn an ACI Certification. Courses include Field Testing Technician, Strength Testing Technician, Concrete Construction Special Inspector, and Adhesive Anchor Installer programs, and can be accessed through ACI University.
