Breakfast Presentation on Fiber Reinforced Concrete

Innovative, high performing concrete with fibers!

    November 30, 2018
    7:45 am
    Argosy Casino
    777 Northwest Argosy Casino Parkway
    Riverside, MO 64150

Featured Speaker: Joshua Lee, P.E., Bakaert Corporation

In today’s market, the demand for cost effective, innovative, and long-term high performing concrete slabs is pushing structural engineers and contractors to provide a strong solution. Fiber reinforced concrete can be that strong solution by providing ductility, post crack strength, high fatigue and impact resistance, and optimized crack control. The focus will be on slabs-on-ground, but will include other structures that can utilize steel fibers as reinforcement. Various design approaches can be used by structural engineers in the industry to design concrete slabs-on-ground, slabs-on-piles and mat slabs. Performance testing of fiber reinforced concrete, to ensure the performance of a fiber reinforced concrete slab, as well as the practical aspects of fiber reinforced concrete, such as concrete placement, finishing of the slab, mix designs, saw cutting, etc, will be discussed.

School of Construction takes second in global competition

A team of students from Pittsburg State University’s School of Construction won second place in a competition that pitted them against 50 universities and 1 high school from the U.S. and abroad.  The competition, put on by the American Concrete Institute, was part of the recent Concrete Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Pittsburg State University students Jonah Lies, Garrett Gross, and Gabriel Blair placed second in the ACI 2018 Pervious Concrete Cylinder Competition, Cementitious Efficiency losing only to a team from Peru.  Additionally, a high school team from St. Paul, Kansas, that was mentored by PSU students, accompanied them to the competition and came away with a sixth-place finish. The high school team was the first high school to compete at an ACI student event.  Advisor Seth O’Brien, an assistant professor in the School of Construction, said that the competition challenged teams to apply sustainability concepts and to use their knowledge of concrete-mixture design by producing pervious concrete that balanced permeability and splitting tensile strength.

    Mike and Donna Murray

Mike Murray, long time concrete enthusiast and promoter was honored recently at the CPG Holiday Party & Awards Banquet Nov. 6, 2018.

Mike was awarded The Outstanding Contribution to the Concrete Industry Award. (Pictured with his wife Donna). He has given a lot of himself and his business over the years. His involvement with the American Concrete Institute, Kansas Chapter of ACI, the Concrete Promotional Group, Midwest Concrete Industry Board, etc. is off the charts! His dedication to self-improvement by encouraging others to become ACI Flatwork Finisher and ACI Field Grade 1 certified is admirable! In 2016 Mike was recognized by Concrete Construction Magazine as one of the Most Influential People in the Concrete Industry. Mike and his wife, Donna, started and continue to host Concrete Cares, a non-profit group, dedicated to supporting those fighting cancer by fundraising in and around the Concrete Community. Many of you have seen them at World of Concrete, ACI National Conventions, State Association Meetings, and many other well-known concrete activities around the U.S. securing donations for Concrete Cares.  Families with children fighting cancer are often the recipients of cash donations to pay for medical bills, medicines, and even funeral expenses. At the recent CPG Awards Ceremony, when Mike was honored with this award, two surprise checks were hand delivered to him by Steve Mauton from Show Me Ready Mix and Shane Bakkan from Bakkan Concrete Construction for Concrete Cares.

Mike you ROCK! Thank you from the concrete industry to a lifetime of caring! We are proud of you!
